Schengen Visa Guide for Indian Travellers (2026)

Planning a Europe trip? Here's everything Indian travellers need to know about the Schengen visa - documents, fees, process, and 2026 updates - in one quick read.

What Is a Schengen Visa?

  • Covers 29 European countries with one visa, valid up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
  • All Indian passport holders need this visa - there's no exemption.
  • Note: ETIAS (launching Q4 2026) does not apply to Indians. It's only for visa-exempt nationalities. You'll still need a full Schengen visa. (Official EU source)

A Simple Planning Calendar for Indian Travellers

Indian travel patterns cluster around a few predictable windows - summer school holidays, Diwali, and the year-end break. Embassies see the same clustering, which is why timing your application matters as much as the documents themselves.

  • Planning a May–June break? Start document collection in March, book your slot the first week of April.
  • Planning around Diwali (Oct–Nov)? Start in August; VFS centres see a secondary surge as families travel during this period.
  • Planning a New Year's trip? Start by mid-October - December slots are scarce, and processing can slow down over the European holiday period at the consulate end too.
  • Traveling off-season (Jan–Mar, excluding New Year)? You have the most flexibility; 4–5 weeks of lead time is usually enough.

2026 Updates: EES & ETIAS

  • EES (live since April 2026): biometric check at the border for everyone, including Indians - doesn't change your application, just entry.
  • ETIAS (Q4 2026): only for visa-exempt countries - not relevant for Indian passport holders.

Full details: European Commission Schengen page

After Approval: What Changes at the Border in 2026

Getting your visa stamped is no longer the final step it used to be. Because of EES, your first entry into any Schengen country in 2026 will include a short biometric registration at the border - fingerprints and a facial photo, linked digitally to your passport. Subsequent entries and exits are then tracked automatically, which is also how your 90/180-day count is verified going forward.

Pre-Departure Checklist

  • Printed copy of your visa approval and passport
  • Printed travel insurance certificate showing coverage amount and dates
  • Printed hotel confirmations and return flight ticket
  • A copy of your cover letter and financial documents (in case of secondary checks)
  • Local currency or a forex card for immediate expenses on arrival
  • Emergency contact list, including the nearest Indian embassy/consulate in your destination country

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. One Schengen visa covers all 29 countries in the zone, but Indian passport holders need this visa regardless of which single country they're visiting or for how many days.
